Iva Fern Proctor Ford was born and raised in Shady Side, Maryland. Her mother was part of the Crandell family and she spent a great deal of time with her Grandmama Crandell, helping around the boarding house she ran for hunters, primarily from Baltimore, Maryland.Married twice, she lost her first husband Samuel Townsend in a tragic accident while duck hunting on the Chesapeake Bay.
